An erect perennial 30-75 cm high, with short, lax branches to the inflorescence.

Flowers: dioecious, red, drooping, on rather slender pedicels and forming small clusters on a lax raceme or panicle; outer perianth segments of female flower reflexed after flowering. Inner fruiting perianth segments 4.0 x 2.5 mm, cordate, each with a broad wing and a small basal tubercle.
